One way I thought about this incident, then and later, was to make it an event in a larger family history. Daddy’s mother had been a patient in the same hospital several times. The first and most traumatic incident was after the birth of a younger brother in 1934, when Daddy was 7. Sallie seems to have been sick when Max was born. She probably had post-partum depression. Whatever she had, it was exacerbated by a severe case of measles and pneumonia. She was bullied and verbally abused by her husband and, I suspect, by her mother-in-law. It was a toxic situation. Elbert feared for the safety of the baby and had Sallie sent to the state mental hospital, and left Daddy and the other children
